The Internet is home to hundreds of websites for writers and editors, but finding the informative sites can be a challenge. Here is a modest sampling of popular sites that provide useful information, advice and support for writers and editors:

 

For Writers

Preditors & Editors. A comprehensive "guide to publishers and writing services for serious writers."

Publishers' Catalogues. A well-organized directory with information on more than 7,000 publishers. Search by country or genre.

The Association of Author's Representatives. The best place to start an agent search. Take note of the AAR's Canon of Ethics.

Publishers Weekly. The so-called Bible of the publishing industry. News, features, reviews and interviews.

The Mystery Writers' Forum. A place where published and unpublished writers (from many genres) share practical information and personal stories related to writing and publishing.

The Rumor Mill. A popular message board for writers and editors. Topics range from "Market News" and "Editors' Anonymous" and to "Rejection Letters" and "Bad Books."

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Inc. Excellent tips for beginning fiction writers and valuable information about scam agents.

Writer's Resource Center. Countless articles on the craft and business of writing.

Vanity Publishing Information, Advice and Warning. A site worth visiting before committing to a deal with a subsidy publisher.

 

For Editors

Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. The classic reference book for writers.

The Chicago Manual of Style. The style guide used by most U.S. publishers and book editors. You have to register to search the manual online.

Guide to Grammar and Writing. A user-friendly site that answers questions about punctuation, grammar and style.

Thesaurus.  An online Roget's Thesaurus.
